Know why duct tape is the greatest invention ever? You're probably a backpacker.
Got boots older than your longest (successful) relationship? You're probably a backpacker.
Prefer your trail name to your real name? Somebody caught you doing something unique on the trail and you're probably a backpacker.
Got stories you love sharing with complete strangers around a campfire? You're probably a backpacker.
Enjoy a tough challenge in less than pleasant conditions? Well, you're probably one of them them *crazy* backpackers. But don't worry, crazy around here is a good thing!
Get a dividend this year and though that much money makes you slightly ashamed you still can't wait to brag about it? If you know what I'm talking about, you're probably a backpacker... though too much bragging (about anything really) may get a can of soda stealthily slipped into your pack on the next trip; thanks in advance for carrying someone else's refreshment! ;o)
This is not backpack traveling, we aim to get out of urban environments with a focus on natural rather than cultural attractions. If you're in the Washington DC area, don't expect endless trips to Shenandoah National Park, there's a whole world of trails throughout the mid-Atlantic and we will explore as many as we can. If you want to hike locally only, go join one of the other meetups, take your pick.
Trips will be near and far and almost always involve a bit of driving. Pennsylvania, Virginia, West Virginia, Maryland, North Carolina, New Jersey, New York, Delaware, Tennessee, Kentucky...
We are not a guide service; members are responsible for their own safety and well being. Everything here is run by volunteers so be kind and thankful when you can and 'play nice' with others - both your organizers and your fellow members. Pull your own weight.
We will have some shared group items, but
each individual is otherwise responsible for providing their own gear, water, food and shelter. It is assumed you know how to use your gear, but if you're new to backpacking, please have a humble attitude when given advice from other more experienced members, they're trying to save you the hassle of learning the hard way.
Respect others, leave no trace, complain little and hike a lot!Interested in joining? We request that you answer all profile questions and we
